Burlesque!!!!
I LOOOOOOOOOVED this movie! Yeah, the story's been told a thousand times before (small town girl goes to Hollywood to make it big) but whatever. I could care less about that. The songs, the dancing, the costumes, the makeup, the hair! Not to mention the two divas extraordinaire, Cher & Christina. PLUS some of the song & dance numbers seemed a little bit influenced by my favorite movie Chicago

R.I.P. June Havoc

Rest in peace, Baby June!
From The Los Angeles Times:

June Havoc, an actress and former child vaudeville star whose early life with her sister -- future burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee -- and their ambitious stage mother was portrayed in the hit Broadway musical "Gypsy," has died. She was 97.
Havoc died Sunday of natural causes at her home in Stamford, Conn., said her caregiver, Tana Sibilio.
"Gypsy," the "musical fable" based on Lee's memoir, opened on Broadway in 1959. It starred Ethel Merman as the overbearing stage mother, Mama Rose.

Kate Winslet as Mildred Pierce

I usually shun any remakes, especially if it's a classic old Hollywood movie being remade (Hello The Women
From Zap2it.com:
HBO has picked up a miniseries adaptation of "Mildred Pierce
The five-hour miniseries, which Todd Haynes ("I'm Not There," "Far From Heaven") co-wrote and will direct, is scheduled to begin filming in New York in the spring, HBO confirms to Zap2it. Winslet will play the title role, a Depression-era housewife who separates from her husband to try to provide for her two daughters -- including one contemptuous of her mother having to work for a living.
Rumors of the project have been circulating for several weeks, and HBO sealed a deal with MGM, John Wells Productions and Killer Films to co-produce the project.
James M Cain's 1941 novel was previously adapted into a 1945 film that earned Joan Crawford a best actress Oscar. The movie was also nominated for best picture.
The miniseries will be Winslet's first role on American television (she appeared in a handful of British shows at the start of her career). Haynes and Jon Raymond ("Wendy and Lucy") collaborated on the script.

Michael Douglas as...Liberace?!!!

I've been hoping for years that Hollywood would make a biopic about the one and only Liberace. I was rooting for Kevin Spacey to portray Liberace, but I think Michael Douglas is a great alternative! I am really looking forward to seeing this.

Michael Douglas To Play Liberace
By Peter Mikelbank
Originally posted Tuesday September 15, 2009 09:00 AM EDT
Michael Douglas is taking a sharp turn from his usual roles to tackle the lead in a film biography of the campy musical performer Liberace, and Matt Damon is playing his longtime lover, director Steven Soderbergh confirmed.
"We've already done some costume and wardrobe tests on Michael, and they're very, very, very good." Soderbergh told a French newspaper at the Deauville Film Festival. "I swear to you, Michael amazed me. He crushed it."
Born Wladziu Valentino, the flamboyant, piano-playing Liberace, nicknamed "Mr. Showmanship" and "Glitter Man," was a staple of early 1950s television, and was an institution in Las Vegas until his death from AIDS in 1987. At his height, he made more money than Elvis and The Beatles.
Damon, Soderbergh said, has agreed to portray Scott Thorsen, the assistant/boyfriend whose 1982 palimony suit for $110 million publically outed the entertainer.
"Matt accepted the challenge," Soderbergh said. "But I have to say I'd already convinced him to gain 30 pounds for The Informant."
Liberace will be filmed off a script by writer/director Richard Lagravense, who was responsible for The Bridges of Madison County. Soderbergh said the budget will allow filmmakers to re-stage segments of Liberace's spectacular stage act, which often involved elaborate stunts such as flying or driving to his piano bench in a Rolls-Royce.

R.I.P. John Hughes

I grew up on his movies. This is very sad news. :(
FROM MTV.COM:
John Hughes -- Filmmaker Behind '80s Classics Like 'Pretty In Pink' & 'Sixteen Candles'-- Has Died
John Hughes, the writer and director whose string of classic '80s comedies essentially defined the genre for decades, has died at the age of 59.
The cause was a heart attack, which he suffered taking a walk on Thursday morning (August 6) during a trip to New York, according to Variety.
Writing for talent like Chevy Chase and Michael Keaton, Hughes had early hits with "Mr. Mom" and the first of the National Lampoon "Vacation" movies. His 1984 directorial debut, "Sixteen Candles," and his follow-up the next year, "The Breakfast Club," were instrumental in launching the pop-culture phenomenon known as the Brat Pack. Actors like Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall became some of the biggest names in Hollywood thanks to Hughes' brand of youth-oriented entertainment.

Wherever Hollywood heartthrob Hugh Jackman goes turns into a three-ring circus.
So it seems fitting that the Aussie A-lister has been cast as P.T. Barnum, the great American entrepreneur who made sideshows and circus acts into big-time entertainment and became famous in the process.
Variety reports that the 40-year-old actor will sing and dance his way through the contemporary musical big-screen biopic "The Greatest Showman on Earth."
The screenplay is being written by "Sex and the City" alum Jenny Bicks. British singer-songwriter Mika is reportedly in talks to write music and lyrics.
Barnum's life inspired the 1980 Broadway musical. The upcoming film will cover his career and love life, including his infatuation with singer Jenny Lind - aka the Swedish Nightingale.
The Lind role is being written, Variety notes, for Anne Hathaway, who performed with Jackman in his opening number when he hosted the Oscars.
Jackman, who stars with Daniel Craig next month in the Broadway drama "A Steady Rain," has already proven his powers as a musical star on stage. He won a Tony for the 2003 musical "The Boy from Oz."
Playing Aussie entertainer Peter Allen, Jackman shimmied aggressively atop a piano while sporting snug-fitting gold lame. Expect some different threads - and moves - when he portrays the 19th Century impresario.

Life After Tomorrow

I caught the documentary Life After Tomorrow not too long ago on Showtime and wow - it enthralled me, to say the least! I was an "Annie" obsessed child, from age 6 or so onwards, when my dad took me to see the musical in San Francisco. And when the movie came out, I had to go opening day. I still have my "Annie" souvenir movie magazine from 1982, which you can see on my Flickr page. This all happened long before the internet, so I spent the rest of my childhood (and some of my adult life!) wondering whatever happened to the little girls in the movie and the ones that performed in the stage show. Of course, I knew what happened to some of them like Sarah Jessica Parker and Alyssa Milano. But what of the others? Did they continue on in showbiz? What was it like being so young & in a Broadway show? How did the experience affect them? Positively? Negatively? Etc. etc. etc... Well, this wonderful documentary answered most of my questions and the companion website, AnnieOrphans.com, answered the rest. The documentary recently got released on DVD, so if you loved "Annie" as much as I did (and still do), I highly recommend picking up a copy at LifeAfterTomorrow.com. I know I will!!!

R.I.P. Ollie Johnston

From: Reuters
Last of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men" dies
Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:31pm EDT
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The last of Walt Disney's original team of animators, known as the Nine Old Men, has died at the age of 95, a Walt Disney Co spokesman said on Tuesday.
Ollie Johnston worked for Disney for 43 years, drawing characters for animated Mickey Mouse short films before contributing to such classics such as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Pinocchio", "Peter Pan" and "The Jungle Book."
Johnston died of natural causes in a long-term care facility in Sequim, Washington on Monday.
Born in Palo Alto, California in 1912, Johnston showed early artistic promise and attended Chouinart Art Institute in Los Angeles. During his final year of college in 1935, Disney approached Johnston to join his fledgling animation studio.
Starting with "Song of the South" in 1946, Johnston became directing animator and served in that capacity in nearly every subsequent film. He retired in 1978 after completing some work on his final film, "The Fox and the Hound."
Johnston devoted his retirement to writing, lecturing and consulting and to model trains, of which he was considered one of the world's foremost experts.
In 2005, he became the first animator awarded a National Medal of the Arts, and he and his lifelong friend and fellow Disney animator, Frank Thomas, were profiled in the 1995 documentary "Frank and Ollie."
Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, who pioneered computer animated films such as "Toy Story" and "Cars," considered Johnston and Thomas as mentors.
"He taught me to always be aware of what a character is thinking, and we continue to make sure that every character we create at Pixar and Disney has a thought process and emotion that makes them come alive," Lasseter said in a statement.
Johnston is survived by two sons.
